The prayer to the Virgin Mary in the first scene has multiple functions: it reminded Donizetti's French and Italian Catholic audience of music they might have heard in church, pulling them into the show; it announces the heroine's name and condition ("Vierge Marie!") before she comes onstage; and it makes a strong contrast to all the miltary music, the marches and flag-waving anthems and battlefield cries of "Rataplan! Petersburg; deals with a Spanish nobleman and forbidden love. Fantasy on the theme from the opera 'The Prophet' by Meyerbeer, 1948. His first staged opera was Enrico di Borgogna in 1818. The Orchestra Musician's CD-ROM Library is a compilation of printed parts, by instrument, of orchestral masterworks by the music world's most celebrated composers. Shortly thereafter, he wrote to Antonio Vasselli outlining his plans for that year, concluding with the somewhat ominous: "All of this with a new illness contracted in Paris, which has still not passed and for which I am awaiting your prescription" [57] But, in the body of the letter, he lays out what he will be aiming to accomplish in 1843: in Vienna, a French drama; in Naples, a planned Ruy-Blas [but it was never composed]; in Paris for the Opéra-Comique, "a Flemish subject", and for the Opéra, "I am using a Portuguese subject in five acts" (which was to be Dom Sébastien, Roi de Portugal, and actually given on 13 November.) Finally, he adds "and first I am remounting Les Martyrs which is creating a furor in the provinces". [57] However, by early February, he is already writing via an intermediary to Vincenzo Flauto, then the impresario at the San Carlo in Naples, in an attempt to break his agreement to compose for that house in July.

Donizetti’s first attempt to compose a tragic work, Gabriella di Vergy (1869), he wrote as an exercise during a period when Italian opera houses were closed for the period of mourning for a pope. For these shortcomings he atones by a considerable though by no means extraordinary store of fluent melody, and by his rare skill in writing for the voice. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s death came at a young age, even for the time period.
