Black songwriter William Handy (the same man who had inaugurated the age of notated blues) recorded one of the first songs with "jazz" in the title: Benton Overstreet's Jazz Dance (september 1917), and performed a "jass concert" in april 1918 at New York's Selwyn Theatre. The steps for the man (opposite for the woman) are simply right-left-right,(hold), left-right-left, (hold) and repeat. Elton Britt of Zack (Searcy County) and Carolina Cotton (born Helen Hagstrom) of Cash (Craighead County) were also heavily influenced by Rodgers’s yodeling style throughout their music careers in the 1940s.

(Norman, 3) Between mid-1914 and mid-1919, 35,600 American patriotic songs were copyrighted, and 7,300 were published, all available to stir the citizens' response to the war and the country. (Watkins,265) In response to the sinking of the Lusitania in 1915, American music publishers put messages in songs like When the Lusitania Went Down, preparing the citizens for an inevitable entry into World War I.
